Spearing flatties & flounder
Spearing flatties & flounder
Hey guys,
Went out strolling with a spear over a few nights recently and had a little success.
Caught most at lower tides either on flats, sand bars and at the start of drop offs.
All between the Brighton/Hampton rocks and Sandringham. Thinking about pushing further south for the next trip.
There's not a huge amount of fish out there for the wader from what I can see, yet haven't had an unsuccessful trip in a while.
The larger of the 3 above, lost a spear prong!

Nice, good feed there.
There seems to be quite a few flounder in PPB, and in popular places too but I never caught them, whether be bait or lures. Rarely hear anyone get flounder either. Wonder why.

Cheers guys. You'll see from that last photo the flathead almost got away! They're very quick.
I only see one or two legal flounder each trip and I'm moving slow and looking carefully. Never caught them on a hook either and I do try with SPs in the same areas I'm wading.

Yeah, almost never heard of flounder got caught on bait/lure. I wonder why. They're definitely around and about.
That white stick on the flathead, that's the spear prong?
How did it break?

Great catch!! Would love to see a picture of your light and spear that you use. I went for my first attempt last week but was unsuccessful.
Also, where about a were you catching them ?

Re: Spearing flatties & flounder
Yep that's a metal spear prong snapped clean off the head, which is replaceable thankfully.
Not sure if it broke on the thrust into the fish or when I pulled it out but I guess the quality is really lacking.
I treat the spear well and always wash it down.
It's a bit tough to pull out of a fish and maybe I'm putting a bit of a twist into it and fatiguing the metal.
I'll monitor it and see what I'm doing wrong
Re: Spearing flatties & flounder
I'll check the guts on the next one and let you know. I suspect a type of worm or small crustacean.
The flathead have been eating little flounder and crabs.
Re: Spearing flatties & flounder
I'll get back to you on a pic of the gear but any underwater light and spear would do.
Tried with headlamps a couple of times and it was too difficult for me. The slightest ripple on the surface removes all visibility, which isn't great as there's a number of rays hanging out there.
As to where, I'm wading in ankle to mid-thigh deep, from the rocks near the New St lights all the way down to, and sometimes 200-300m past, the Sandy yacht club. Just note that if you follow the beach past the yacht club, you have to walk through car park there and it's bit of a hassle.
You also have the Brighton dog-friendly beach. And you have to stay 50m from piers I believe which is a no-brainer at Brighton anyway.
