a dusky has the big thumb print spot on the tail and a small yank has 5 (i think) with that nice iridescent blue color hence the common name southern blue spot .

and i can't remember one has even gill spines and the other has uneven but i will endeavor to find out (i think the dusky has the even)

EDIT i found it .... mate i have some augments over this up here in east gippy

Thanks tackleberry! Didn't know all flathead east of tyers was a dusky. There was definitely no thumb print on the tail of this one but also no obvious blue spots on the bottom either so i wasn't sure but i figure there's probably not many duskys in the bay. I've also got some big flattys at bemm river with no spot and I've read somewhere that the bigger ones lose the spot so i always get confused.

It's neither I don't think. Looks like arguably the best eating of the lot, Rock Flathead. Usually darker almost green mottled colour with a slightly rounded fairly narrow head

It actually turned very dark after it died (and yes it was very yummy! Lightly battered and deep fried) so i think you guys are right! Rock flathead never came to mind for some reason...
