Hi All,

After a bit of advice targetting gummies out of Hastings. I have jagged a few as by catch, but would really like to start catching them consistently.

I have done a lot of reading, and it doesnt seem like Hastings is a great spot for them (for whatever reason) and it seems like the following areas are my best bet; I would prefer less motoring if possible, but none of the options are too painful really.
- Top end in one of the main channels
- Out front of Cowes
- between bouy 5-16 on the edge of the drop off

Plan is to Anchor up, drop some baits, and sit out a tide and see what happens.

Rig I plan to use is a running sinker, with 5/0 circles

Bait is frozen yakkas, slimeys, squid. As well as local prawns and pillies. Hopefully can jag a few fresh baits while out too

Sinkers: up to 16-20oz depending on tide

Rods/Reels: 6-10kg rods, 6000-10000 spinning reels with 30lb braid

If anyone could give me some tips, advice, or point out what I have wrong that would be awesome, and I would really appreciate it.

Scrag I have previously mentioned in a similar thread to learn and understand the species.

Gummies have a strong sense of smell so natural fresh baits are always a good start.

When choosing a spot to fish navionics is a great app to study areas and get an idea on where you would like to go.

Gummy sharks will use the channels of westernport as a roadway from the entrance's to the top end of the port. Travelling up over the banks to feed on high tides.

Use the tides and channels to find likely areas that the gummy will be travelling set up in likely areas and be patient in your chosen spots.

Make sure your bait doesn't spin in the current. That's a start hope it helps.

Thanks Guys! Thanks for the advice RB, and I will be checking that vid out for sure nudey. Youfish is one of my favourites. I feel shows like YouFishTV amd OzfishTV are so much more beneficial to local fishos that the worstelings and monster fishes of the world.

Go check out the catch-up of this weeks oz fish tv they were fishing for gummies of Somers I believe however they show where they were fishing on a map. Has some good tips on catching them. For gummies fresh bait is best anything like squid salmon Trev anything fresh with work

Can get them a hell of a lot closer than that consistently, including big girls at certain times. Find the highways and you'll be sweet. 4 rods, 4 different baits, bait offcuts or half chewed up as berley, melt a frozen log in a bucket and slowly ease the contents out to minimise the rubbish fish. Last tip is confidence. Don't move from your spot, that minimal berley trail will be wasted if you move every hour or so. They are a shark after all and have very good senses.
