G'day, I am also looking at maybe catching a Mako or two, so this is for guys to give hints and tactics that they found to work.

Ok a few tips/
1.Dont break your burley trail.
2.Bottom bash for flatties make some noise.
3.Don't let them in the boat until dead.

I only caught 1 and that was when a whale had gone past followed by some penguins

I'll re-phrase that. Do you use a burley bomb out the back of boat suspended and throw out pilchard pieces every minute or so. And keep drifting with a lure suspended under a balloon with a squid head or fish head....?

Doesn't really matter what burley you use.

If you want you can just buy or make a heap of burley bombs and put em in a crate trailing out the back.

But cubing pillies and/tuna/salmon will also help.

Soak a rag in tuna oil and have that in the water as well.

Frozen burley bomb in a scaler bag bit of tuna oil. Try and use fresh yakkas or slimies if not a bit of frozen salmon Kouta or squid.

Firstly,we found the Seaford Bait berley logs dispersed at a much slower rate than the Gotcha variety. The Gotcha ones just crumbled far too quickly.
Secondly, use the twin scaler bags, the ones with the fine mesh inner.
Thirdly, we still haven't landed one, only hooked up once, on a live couta, got two runs, then dropped him.
Fourthly, apparently the surface slick is the vital part, so either add tuna oil, or use lots of oily fish, We put salmon, couta and yakkas through the mulcher and in to blocks.
Mulch them while they're still frozen btw..

We have caught plenty of Mako's off Bermagui. If we were just shark fishing well we would just get a tub of fish heads, frames and guts from the fish cleaning tables and put them through a burley bin with a masher. This worked very well and you do not need a heavy trail - if it is a bit choppy you do not need to use the masher very often. Another technique if you are after Tuna and Sharks was to get a head and frame or two from good sized Tuna and just tie them to the back of the boat and then cube. This will keep a slick going for hours. If you are seriously after sharks use a wire trace. As for bait well sharks are not all that fussy and we have caught them on striped tuna, slimies (dead and alive), mullet, salmon etc. Anything oily works well. Yellowfin will occasionally take a light wire trace but more often than not will ignore them. Best of luck!
