can i use normal pliers to crimp wire leaders? or do i need to buy an actual crimping tool?

I'd say use crimping tool.
Imagine you finally hooked on one and pop! Bye bye sharkie coz the crimp fails.

Definitely use crimping pliers. The surface area crimped is most of the crimp itself, whereas using wire cutters-the surface of contact is minimal.
I got mine from Bunnings for about $30 and they are awesome.
