Both these rod holders are designed to be used with surf rods. The idea is to have the rod tip at almost 90 degrees and to keep the fishing line high and out of where the waves are breaking. The breaking waves hitting the line, increase drag and can cause the line to go slack.

Both rod holders have the facility where you can put your boot and push the spike into the surface. I have seen people with poly pipe style rod holders using a hammer or sledge hammer to drive the poly pipe into the ground.

These rod holders are designed to keep the fishing reel above the sand and hopefully above the rouge waves and out of the water.

If you notice one has reflective tape on it, this helps at night, and hopefully it doesn't get left behind.

My preference is to use the silver rod holder, as the red one has it faults.

What is available for the pier fisho?

I have a rod holder that fits at Blairgowie, yet on other piers it will not fit.

Piers usually have one side that may have a fence with either galsteel pipe or a wooden fence. On the edges of the pier planks is usually a wooden border that unfortunately varies in width.

On some piers, the planks have gaps between them, so this allows for the rod holder legs/spike to be put in the gap when it is wide enough.

Using this rod holder this way, places the fishing rod parallel to the pier. This is not a bad idea as it decreases the chance of a hooked fish pulling your rod into the water.

This rod holder can be used on piers, that have gaps between the wooden planks.

These rod holders are available with either a large or small g clamp.

The angle is adjustable.

The G clamp does not hold as well on the pipe. It holds much better on wood.

The idea came that it would be good to use either a cord or occy strap to secure the smaller G clamp, particularly when it is clamped onto the metal railing.
