VIC COUPLE FINED IN WA

Post by Paulanderson » Fri Apr 28, 2023 6:45 am

The following reflects that WA magistrates take their fisheries seriously - and we think $100 a kg for KGW is bad LOL!

A Victorian couple have been hit with a combined fine of more than $5,000 for exceeding fishing limits in Broome last year.
The matter was heard in the Broome Magistrates Court on Monday, with the duo not in attendance after entering an endorsed plea of guilty.
The court heard a 68-year-old man and 51-year-old woman from Rochester, Victoria, were stopped by Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development compliance officers on Broome-Cape Leveque Road in August 2022.
Officers discovered 28.74kg of skinned fish fillets, which exceeds the 10kg per person limit allowed for large pelagic finfish.
The pair were handed a combined fine of $5,244.

Oh wow.
That 28kg of fish fillet is now worth $5k.
It says they didn't attend the court, guessing the police will come and knock their door?

They did not have to attend as they plead guilty but the law seems to be beyond stupid.

You are allowed a maximum possession limit of 10kg of fillets per person.

One decent pelagic fish will exceed this. So you can legally catch it and keep it but the moment you fillet it you are breaking the law....

Yeah that seems bizarre. Then again it is WA we're talking about... How many KG is wasted on a 30kg Sailfish? Throw in a Spaniad and something else on a weekend trip and you're well over the 10kg possesion limit despite falling within the bag limits with only 3 fish...

Chalk it up as yet another case in this country of illogical beaurocracy....

so you fillet up 10kg's worth, and 10kg for your partner and throw the rest? sounds strange.

Rules are a little complicated but they would have been ok if they followed the rules you can 10kg with skin off plus 10kg with skin on or 10kg skin off plus 1 in carcass form
