My Thoughts

Post by denis barden » Wed Jan 25, 2023 4:05 pm

Ok
Ive caught over 5000 whiting in the past 4 years from mainly St Leonard where I live
I DO NOT SELL FISH
I record all fish taken for Fisheries -General Fishing
If I go out for a specific species I record them in a different book
I record all data for each fish as per pics
My thought are -If I continue to catch heaps of whiting Fisheries will keep the bag limit and measure length the same
If I always dont catch fish would fisheries think there aint enough to go round and adjust the limits
I measure fish from head to gap in tail
Your Thoughts

I think you're taking a responsible approach to it there Denis. The better information and data the Fisheries have, the more accurate they can estimate population numbers, etc and manage the fisheries to ensure that it is sustainable for generations to come.

Talking about catching over 5000 whiting isn’t exactly what I’d call amazing. What do you do with that many whiting fillets?

The average catch is only 24 / week

I think that there are many people that catch a lot around the bay but just don't really advertise. I don't think that Denis's catch would make the slightest dent on the Whiting population.

Figures don't mean much without the context of population numbers, density, etc.
The bag limit and minimum size have been determined through research to ensure those populations are sustainable.
