Trout, successful invasive species?

Post by Sebb » Sun Aug 14, 2022 2:02 pm

A lot of two sides opinions on this.
Trout does provide fantastic rec fishing in Aus, contributes to the economy, etc.
But it's undeniable that it does affect the native species.

What do you think?
Pro to trout stocking or no?

I'd rather see an end to trout stocking than see our native fish species go extinct. I've enjoyed catching a few rainbows as part of the stocking programs the Department runs but that's my position anyway.

I agree, as much as I enjoy trout fishing available in Aus, I also don't want to see any species going extinct.
Although there are trout natural recruitment, but it seems to still be controllable in comparison to rabbits or carp.

Remove closed seasons and only stock selected impoundments.

yeah, remove closed season and up the max size limit to 45 cm, and only stock in dams and impoundments that are man-made, away from the native species. also, I know that some natives are being bred so if we can release a few hundred of those into our rivers it will help.

I can just imagine some of our lakes and rivers without Trout, what would you be catching besides Blackfish and Redfin? Trout have their place in Australia

Prior to salmonid and redfin, (and carp), some lakes can have other natives like cod, yellas, and bass.
But what would lakes like purumbette be like? Just galaxias and that's it?

I'm sure it's more complicated than just chucking in fish to any random lakes.

I think that if the populations of the wild invasive trout can be sustainability managed, it's a great resource.
As long as there is no irreparable damage to the waterways and native species populations, I feel there are benefits to stocking Vic waterways.
