The garmin version has been about for a few years now but when lowrance released their version (identical I believe) the tech seemed to gain a lot more popularity. Overnight humminbird released a teaser of their version which is due sometime in spring I believe.

There's some situations where this tech is proving to be extremely useful for those who have adopted it but still a few instances where it doesn't really seem that useful

kinda cool but i also think it detracts from the mystery and fun of fishing a bit.
Each to there own but I personally spend a lot on electronics. If I could only afford a 10k for a rig it would be a 5k boat with a 5k sounder.

Basically it has to be a full scan searchlight sonar in vertical mode. I wasn't aware that recreational Sounders had that feature.

It's pricey stuff
Looks cheap to me for what you get.

I assume you need the garmin 6k ish headunit to work with it as well.

Not at all the Garmin Echomap UHD 95sv (1899) is compatible and from lowrance the elite fs 9 (1799) is compatible with the lowrance version. The smaller screen sizes in these series may be as well but I don't think there's a point getting it on a smaller screen. Most guys I've seen running it have it running on a separate head unit

I also agree to this, but not to the extent of $$$ you allocate :-D
A good sounder is worth its weight in gold if you know how to use it properly, I've found plenty of snapper last season thanks to locating areas where they were holding by using sidescan.its a game changer.

Gone are the days of using a sounder for gps marks and depth sounding only.
I do agree about livesight and similar tech not being for the bay though, you just don't need it for bread and butter stuff.
Eventually just like 3D sidescan and downscan the need for a separate box and transducers will be negated.
Then perhaps I will look into it. For now it's too cumbersome to be on my little boat.

It's fairly limited in its usage, for similar money a 175hw is far better value for 80%+ of people. Unlike downscan and sidescan, you're not using livesight, live scope or whatever other name to sound up Whiting, Snapper, Kings, Tuna or Swords. Which is why I said it's pricey, almost $4k total that for most people is $2k wasted
