Had a pea soup fog close in yesterday. Caught out a few people trying to get back in the entrance. It was so thick you couldn't see the rock walls till you were 30 MTRS from them. We had to take the rescue boat out to lead one guy in who's plotter was not up to the task. No charts.
There was a fairly big roll on to. This made the bar a bit tricky as it was breaking heavily each side of the leads. There was no margin for error, you had to be on the leads.
Two lessons here.
The conditions that produce fog, particularly in autumn, also often produce swell. East coast lows leave a lot of moisture in the air and send swells in from the Tasman sea.
If you venture outside of lakes and rivers a good plotter with latest charts are as important as other safety gear.
