Whats the point? hooks and lines..
The post about sharp hooks got me thinking.
When it comes down to it the two most important pieces of gear we use is probably the actual hook and line that we are using. So i am sure that this means that a lot of fishermen are going to have their sworn lifelong loyalties to certain products.
Do you guys have a specific brand of hook and line that you always use? Or do you swap and change all the time or even just buy whatever you can get your hands on?
For me i am not 100% loyal to anything but i do have favourites that i tend to go for. As far as line goes, my snapper rods are spooled with Penn Mariner 15 or 20lb hi-vis mono. Its a cheaper line so big spools of it arent too expensive and i like the hi-vis so that i can see it when we are running a lot of lines off the back of the boat. I tend to use a long leader so i am not worried about the hi-vis potentially spooking the fish.
My lighter rods are usually spooled with Platypus Pre Test clear. This is mostly used on my whiting and squid gear where i am more worried about potentially spooking the fish.
As far as braid goes, i couldnt tell you. I dont use it a lot. I have everything from old school Fireline to Aldi special.
And i almost always use Black Magic fluorocarbon supple leader in either 6, 12, 20 or 40lb depending on what we are targeting. I find it easy to tie and i like the packet it comes in.
For hooks i like to use Mustad Big Red hooks in 4/0, 6/0 and 8/0 depending on the bait im using. Supposedly red is the first colour to disappear underwater and i dont know if that helps, but i like to think it does. But i did recently buy a pack of Mustad 6/0 octopus circle hooks, but i havent had a chance to try them yet. Ive been wanting to make the switch to circle hooks for a while but my snapper rods are all baitrunners and i dont know how well circle hooks work with baitrunners.
I also use Mustad bloodworm long shanks when needed.
PS: The heading a great quote from a great movie:
"whats the point? Hooks and lines"
"well.. you lose one, you rig one"

We are creatures of habit. I am a big fan of momoi line and leader for my game gear. Mustad hooks 90% Of the time red and stainless 2/0 to 10/0 for smaller hooks I usually go gamakatsu

Jigheads in my case are whatever is usually on special when I need to buy.
But if I find good ones on sale for cheap anywhere i will usually just buy it for use later..
Line, well no certain brands in particular yet. I'm still trialing a fair few lol.
I do like dragoncall braid. And the old sunline and daiwa td sensor .

The Whiting hook i use all the time Mustad 92608 No4
Gamma whiting hooks supplied by fisheries
Snapper and Flathead hooks supplied by Fisheries
Fisheries book that I fill in every time I go out fishin-shows all data on the catch-All types of fish caught and released-1 page per day
A Research book specific to a species using either of the Gamma hooks Mainly Whiting,Snapper and Flathead
When the books are filled out I send them to Fisheries whom send me a new one
What fisheries do with them I have no idea but I use them as a history of GPS marks for the days outing
