Bass yabbies cannons creek

Post by chooka24 » Wed May 13, 2020 7:15 pm

Hello fellow fishos. Have not been on here for long time. Went for fish today first day allowed for weeks with lockdown and wow was it good for the mental health. Does anyone know why pumping bass yabbies has been banned at cannons creek?

Only ever get enough for a fish with my father, 15 year tradition. The limit should be reduced I think. Just a real shame it has been banned more interested in why. As seems to be plenty of yabbies.

Sounds like a nice tradition to have with Dad, chooka :tu:

We do something similar on a Holiday to Black Point. Kids love going for them and they are gun bait on the Yellow-fin Whiting from the shore. Kids get their rods on the afternoon rising tide and BAM , , , , fish on.

We do it only on one day, plus other activities and fishing, crabbing on the other days. It's a Holiday not just fishing.

But the area we get them from is wide, which also is where the shacks are. But the area is decimated from bait collecting, hence we only do it one day, plus, not worth the effort for multiple days.

It would have an effect on the food chain for sure.

I spoke to Fisheries about this and they told me that unless the area is declared a Marine Park then bait gathering or pumping and fishing are not prohibited. I assume it would need to go through legislation to be banned. The Warneet Foreshore Committee do not own the land, it's public land.

probably one of the easiest ways is down load the Victorian Rec Fishing guide - come in handy in many ways

under the Marine section the is a link " can I fish here " stand where you wont to pump Yabbies and push the button

if you are in a Marine park or restricted area it will tell you - if it says you can fish they Fisheries say its fine
