Hey, Dougie. Thanks for helping out with a general setup.

In regards to lures, what's recommended and what size? My rod is rated for 50g -150g. Not sure what throwing lighter lures will do, or should I stick to the rated cast weights?

Cheers!

You can carry as many or as few lures as suits you. This is a little break down of whats in my tackle box at the moment. At minimum you want a metal of some kind, a poppeer and a diver. Anything over about 100g is extremely difficult to cast.

Without breaking the budget.

A busted 75 slug with a single hook on it.

A rapala ghost XXXrap or SLXR 12. These come in both diver and stickbait, I like the diver, Cam likes the stickbait.

A williamsons jet popper 5 1/4 in whatever color suits you

A GT icecream OR a richter plug OR some other kind of surface dancer.

A Raider 85g with a single.

A Slug Go of some kind.

More expensive

A selection of Nomads, the madscad, riptide, chug norris and maverick are all good. I really really like the medium sized madscad in pilchard.

Very expensive

An OTL Swimpop, Popper, and Chop.

What about lures that are under the recommended cast weight of the rod? Is that an issue or will it just not cast as far?

Cheers!

Correct bud. The rod just won’t load up as well and therefore won’t cast the lighter lure as far. No issues otherwise Kage79.

When I decided to start rock fishing I didn't think I'd be as confused as this! Haha.

When I spearfish it's easy. Have mask. Have snorkel. Have wetsuit and fins. Have polespear. See fish. Dive. Let get go of spear. Miss.... Killed another starfish. Doh! Repeat...

All of you have been extremely patient and it's nice to be in a forum that actually offers help. The internet isn't totally broken.

Cheers, all!!

If you're using quality braid you can still spin with a 25 gram or even use a squid jig. People put massive $ into things like that but ultimately on the ledge there's no reason you can't just fish with whatever you want. The line is a much bigger deal than the rod unless you want to cast really really small lures.

Thas 962 saltist hyper is a beautiful rod, I literally used to squid jig with it and the drag just turned down when I didn't want to take a bunch of gear into a spot that I knew had squid but also pelagics. I actually broke mine trying to site cast a whole squid at what I thought was a little school of kings at Phillip Island one day.

Thanks, Dougie.

I decided to go with 50 lb braid and Tiagra 80 lb leader.

Hope that works! Haha.
