Pretty new to the hobby and Im looking for places to fish around 15km from Melbourne Cbd at most, any ideas?

Salt or freshwater doesn't matter to me
A lot of options within 15km.
I'm assuming landbased?
Yarra River, marybrnong river, Docklands, and all the piers are great fishing spots.
Even albert park and other stocked lakes.
Google Vic fisheries stocked lakes and you'll get a list.
Get yourself this book if you could. Tackle shops should have them.

Any good land based places for squidding? Preferably closer to the city centre than farther away

Closest I can think of is Brighton. But unsure if it's still closed or already open.
Otherwise, Beaumaris.

depends on where it is, and how big you plan to catch. I would probably say no, but pm me for specifics.

Well, you can. But will it be nice and easy to use, maybe not...
Vice versa, you can use 1000 reel, but will you be able to stop and pull big cod with it, maybe not...

If you're casting lures with that big heavy reel, you'll find it harder than smaller reel (lighter, etc?).

A 1000-size reel is ok for 30 cm cod, don't want to use it for bigger fish or the chance of them dying from exhaustion is high.

Don't think so.

Question-- I have just watched about 60 episodes of Border security and it seems the illegal boats that fish our waters, are only interested in the shark fins and just leave the rest of the shark to bleed too death ,and it just dies in pain. Why don't they just take the whole bloody shark instead and feed their families for the week.
