Bream/bait
Hello! I have been fishing an estuary a lot recently, very tidal relatively big/wide creek. I've been mainly fishing for bream on prawns and been catching 3/4 basically every night, some pretty big ones too. Around April I decided to go and use some pillies to see what else I could catch, hooked something huge on 2000 size reel and 6 pound fluro, huge fight. Ended up getting the beast to the bank and my mate saw what he reckons was a big silver skinny body, he estimated around 80cm. No Idea what it was, may have been a jewie? not sure what else it could have been. Around 1km from the creek entrance to the ocean. Lots of other fish as well, mullet, eps, bream, caught a flattie once too. Any thoughts on what the fish was and how I should attempt to target whatever it was? Have basically only used surface lures as its very very weedy and practically impossible to use sub surface lures.

Re: Bream/bait
I've seen a guy caught a muloway on half pilly in the yarra system, so its possible.
Otherwise, there's other species that are silver and long. Like couta, or maybe pike. Need more details.

It was about 8 oclock pitch black, one huge run about a 10 minute fight, I was thinking maybe a huge tailor? I never saw the fish, my mate saw it and said it was long silver and about 80cm

Re: Bream/bait
Muloway has a distinct fight. Usually they swim away from you/rod, straight and fast. Then they turn. You feel like they drop the bait or hook came off, but no, they turn and swim towards you (opposite direction of the first run), and usually to structures.jayonekinger wrote: ↑Tue Oct 22, 2024 8:25 pmIt was about 8 oclock pitch black, one huge run about a 10 minute fight, I was thinking maybe a huge tailor? And not much headshake.
Tailor will shake and jump, more acrobatic.

Mate! must have had a mulloway, almost identical to what you just described!! any idea on how I should target them knowing they are in the system? would livebaiting be worth it, thousands of decent sized mullet, 30-50 cmSebb wrote: ↑Wed Oct 23, 2024 8:07 amMuloway has a distinct fight. Yup, live baiting is the best to get them.jayonekinger wrote: ↑Wed Oct 23, 2024 9:14 pmMate! must have had a mulloway, almost identical to what you just described!! any idea on how I should target them knowing they are in the system? would livebaiting be worth it, thousands of decent sized mullet, 30-50 cmSebb wrote: ↑Wed Oct 23, 2024 8:07 amMuloway has a distinct fight. Start in the afternoon and catch some mullet, put in bucket with aerator.
Around sunset, set it up.
Depends on the system, i found it best when its slack tide during the night, that's when they bite.
But never know, they're funny creatures, not easy to catch. Hence the title ghost fish

Re: Bream/bait
If you're chasing a big one, then use a big mullet. Make it worth it for them to "hunt". But i used the ones less than 30cm.jayonekinger wrote: ↑Thu Oct 24, 2024 5:27 pmWhat's the best size? never livebaited before except slimys offshore.
