I read that the whiting are not strong swimmers, so, they only move back to the depth of the bay, or slightly out of the bay during the colder months.
This cycle occurs every year around May & June that the sexually matured whiting, which longer than 28 cm, move back to the deeper water, 9m+ depth, for the mating and breeding period.
and they keep there looking and hiding in the deeper pockets in the bay for the younger ones, until they ready to swim back to the wormer and shallower water for feeding, which is usually around spring
Not sure if this answered your question, but it is all comes from googling information on internet.
Cheers

Does anybody know of a quide or a chart that shows when particular fish "come on the bight" so to speak? Or is there just a general lull through winter?
