Newbie
Hi All,
East Gippslander here down in the big smoke with the boat and would love to get out in 1 of the bays over the weekend and catch some squid. Any tips, places or marks would be greatly appreciated. Never caught any of the slimy little things. A snapper, whiting or gar wouldn't go astray either. Mornington end of the bay or Hastings in WP preferred.

Re: Newbie
There's a few spots just out of Mornington for squid.
I think most of whiting are over the other side of the bay ATM

Re: Newbie
Western Port. If you're after Squid head to tyabb bank and give it a go. Use your sounder to find the drop offs and position your drift according to the wind direction or tide flow so that you're drifting over the drops. I like to have two jigs in the rod holders a ft above the bottom with a small ball sinker for extra weight as i drift, and another casting ahead of my drift, find it allows me to cover most options and more ground. 7-4m is the depth i find best, at the start and end of tides and slack water. If heading out for whiting, fish the afternoon tides. They will be hard to get on the morning run ins that lack flow. Middle Spit seems to still have some numbers, as well as tortoise head bank. I prefer fishing the edges in about 8m, burely hard and pippis or fresh squid strips always get the job done. Hope that helps a little
