I got a few whiting and a couple of squid around the corner at St Leonards, the squid in particular were very tentative, mostly hooked right on the tip of the candles and there were a number that grabbed the jig and let go again.

Try those California squid in the frozen package, they are not fresh but they are small.. On those frozen packages of California Squid. I do believe you should use different hooks depending upon bait.
Baitholders work well for Yabbies and Scrubworms.
Wide Gapes are great for Shrimp.
