Re: I need a solution to a soft plastic fishing problem
I wouldn’t really use much more than 1/4oz, otherwise you sacrifice the action of the jig, I would recommend getting a pair of waders if you want to get out further. You could also get a longer rod and using braided fishing line can also increase casting distance. Hope this helps.

Re: I need a solution to a soft plastic fishing problem
Use thin braid, 10lb max.
1/4 oz max.
It will easily give you 20m

Re: I need a solution to a soft plastic fishing problem
Use lighter braid. I used to have the same problem trying to cast with mono line. Switched to braid (15lb - coz I didn't know any better) and instantly casting distance went up heaps. Then I went down to 8lb and I can confidently say that casting distance has doubled vs mono.

Re: I need a solution to a soft plastic fishing problem
If you are just after flatties, then simple solution is slide a ball sinker above the jig head or use a running sinker rig. I used to do this with mono and it works, I still do it in the boat to get the SP down faster, the only downside is you won't get many other species. Except maybe salmon if you...

Re: I need a solution to a soft plastic fishing problem
get a rated soft plasitcs rod and not a squid one, using lures and braid you wont have as many tell tale signs of a bite and take off if you set the drag right.

Re: I need a solution to a soft plastic fishing problem
Another thing that will determine distance is how full your spool is. Anything over about 2 mil of lip will have a detrimental affect on you distance. If you find you cant fill your spool with the length of braid, take the braid off and start filling the spool with mono to take up the space required...

Re: I need a solution to a soft plastic fishing problem
Nice experiments. whichever that works for you.
I personally like 7ft2 up to 7ft10 for flicking plastic.
Squid rod is a bit more parabolic and regular taper, which I don't really like for plastic. Fast taper rod for plastic is the best (at least for me anyway).

Re: I need a solution to a soft plastic fishing problem
So i just experimented by casting a jig head on my squid rod and I was able to gain about an extra 10m straight away which I put down mainly to the reel (vanquish) which has 15lb braid. The soft plastics set up I was using has an Okuma flame reel which isn't the greatest . I noticed the line peeled...

Full to the Bream!!!
The First Bream trip for 2021 was a Sensational Trip. This time of the year my favorite way to fish for them is with hard bodies on the flats. https://scontent.fmel14-2.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/143958555_10159353909824515_7866795064620316221_o.jpg?_nc_cat=107&ccb=2&_nc_sid=b9115d&_nc_ohc=rhZNVB6uxUQA...
