Re: Clifton springs struggle

You're right about the weather, if it's not blowing border-line gale winds it's been a cold overcast southerly. I think that this season, though delayed due to weather will be a plentiful season. We've had a bumper year for squid spawns, and I think they're a great seasonal indicator species being h...

St Leonard's Report 23/01/2020

Hey Everyone, January is nearly done and dusted and as the tourists are quieting down the fishing is perking up. Squid are remaining active during the rising and setting sun while smaller numbers are being caught during the day. The heavy rains have pushed the squid into deeper water as they dislike...

St Leonard's Report 08/02/2020

Hey Everyone, February arrived delivering us a healthy mix of strong winds and stormy downpours. Strong winds and heavy rain pushed most species into deeper waters away from the pier resulting in mixed land-based fishing. Squid have actively returned to the pier during the strong hot north winds fol...

Re: TWO CARS SEIZED FOR UNDERSIZE SNAPPER HAULS

Breaks your heart seeing all those illegally kept juvenile pinkies, they're the next generation of breeders and because of four individual’s greed we've now lost 119 out of the environment. We' are going to have increased stress as a result of the SA snapper ban, the last thing we need is these youn...

Re: St Leonard's Report 25/02/2020

The sharp wind really took everyone back, the amount of people fishing halved within minutes following the trend if the boats returning to the ramp. Kgw were all caught on the woodern area past the concrete casting into the sandy hollows between the weed. Theres a sand break, weed/sand/weed thats q...

Re: Storing bait in fridge

I mainly freeze squid wings, heads, tentacles and other smaller mixed species for bait, working towards zero waste. Anything that's not bait becomes burley. Squid I find you can re-freeze a few times without a loss in quality, while fish will become mushy. Water in the cells expand when frozen brea...

Re: First day in autumn in Swan Bay

I am a little surprised the larger whiting were not hanging out in the sandy holes of Swan Bay, they have been productive in the neighbouring town of St Leonards. Caught a couple land based 32-41cm Saturday along with a few squid. If the burley doesn't do the trick what can you do. I think after ye...

Re: First day in autumn in Swan Bay

It's always nice to see healthy numbers of the juvenile King George Whiting in Swan Bay and other inlet nurseries. There is plenty of research being done looking at the movement of species within Port Phillip Bay, including the King George Whiting study launched September 2019. "We know whiting ente...
