Any sambos off the surf yet?
Definitely the time of yearto start looking for Aussie salmon off the surf, but haven't heard any reports.
Anyone heard where they're going off?

Re: Any sambos off the surf yet?
Haven't heard much from the surf yet, but there has been plenty of salmon & trevs within the bay holding around structure.
Corio bay has had plenty of action and Portarlington Pier has had smaller 30cm bay trout amongst the pylons with pinkies and trevs between them.
Barwon river had been good for the trevs, less so salmon.
Picked these up on dusk land-based last week, throwing 3" Zman Minnowz on 1/4oz 3o hooks.
Great fun on the lighter gear.

I'm thinking to start looking for those bigger salmon off the surf, but maybe not yet.

Never targeted them, but now keen to have a go land-based - med-light gear, so realistically slugs up to 25g and placcies. Might ever try poppers.
BTW, the freakiest thing - pedalling over a bust up, it's like a rain from underneath - a school just came through under me

They're great fun to catch, fight hard, jump, etc.

They're incredible when they're busting up topwater, caught plenty just surface bashing straight jig-heads, no plastics!
May try the Barwon this weekend, depending on the rain.
We get a few at the mouth this time of year and throughout the surf, this spot takes advantage of a longer rod because you often need to punch out deeper for the deeper and cleaner water. Had good success last year punching out 3" plastics on a 9'6 rod for salmon & tailor, or smaller 2" for trevs.

Re: Any sambos off the surf yet?
Friend caught some nice fish off Apolo bay today.
Fished Barwon Heads high tide slack, partner caught one fish 40cm+ on the 3" Zman Minnowz
Then downsized after many hits, but no takes to the 2.5" slim swimz and a 10g metal, and every cast had 5-6 smaller 25-30cm fish chasing.
Landed about 30 smaller fish.

Re: Any sambos off the surf yet?
Spent Saturday down at apollo bay, lots of fish caught from the surf as well as rock wall.
I fished the surf and caught several fish most around the 40cm and above size. Well worth the trip if you want to get a few bigger fish.
