Scan And Georeference Marine Chart

Post by CannonsJS » Fri Nov 22, 2019 12:00 pm

I was recently lent a chart of the Lakes Entrance offshore area so I could copy it and then hopefully use it to put me onto some good fish. It took me a little while to work out how to scan, georeference and then import onto the iphone and be able to view my location on it with the phone's GPS. Because of this I thought I would share the steps incase it helps someone.

These are the steps I took:
  • Digitise the chart. Because I only have an A4 scanner I had to take 6 overlapping scans of the chart to cover the entire chart area. This was done using my little HP scanner at home, but you could potentially even photograph the chart
  • Merge Images. Using Adobe Photomerge, I combined the 6 scanned images into one mega highres image of the chart. You can also use free software like Hugin or PTGUI.
  • Import Map to Phone or Tablet. Install the free Avenza Maps app onto your device and then select "Import Map". Choose the GeoTiFF you created in the last step and import it.
You should now be able to see your location on your imported chart. To test it I tracked my drive from Lakes Entrance to Bairnsdale with Avenza Maps and it was pretty much spot on. See image below for a small section of the chart with my track in Orange.

Many places will scan building plans... which just happen to be about the size of a chart. Cost is around $10.00

haha. Yeah I know. I have the paid Navionics app, but this chart had been updated with the offshore reefs, and hundreds of fishing marks. Similar to what re-tyred has shared on here but with more detail.
Still didn't help me get a snapper on the weekend though. :(

Probably money well spent. Saves the stuffing around with the first couple of steps.
