Early April is still too late. In most seasons the irrigation flows from Eildon are still going strong. With the shortening days and dropping air temps combined with the irrigation water the fishing slows down or at least becomes patchy. If you wanted to maximise the catch of fish you would hold it in February or early March at the latest. If you are trying to get tourists into the town during a slow time you would hold it in July.
While the event was a success and some good fish were taken the general conclusion of the punters was that too few fish were taken. It wasn't just the weather that weekend, it is the time of the year under local conditions. January to early March provide the most reliable fishing for natives in the weir. Even downstream towards Shepparton the fishing slows down after early March. The Murray being warmer goes well until mid April.

Obviously they have enough tourists on the March long weekend so want to create another bumper tourism weekend for Nagas!davek wrote: ↑Sat May 18, 2019 11:20 amThe Shepp rumours are on the go again, cheers davoApril Fool wrote: ↑Sat May 18, 2019 10:43 amWord on the...Shepparton streets is that the comp may be brought forward to the long weekend in March.

Proving beyond doubt that Sheppartonians are more switched on than Nagambogans!
Got the email a week ago I think it was, not sure if it’s a good or bad idea yet.

Here in South Australia, The Whyalla Snapper Competition was dropped a few years ago and the main reason was less patronage because of fewer fish being caught and smaller fish too. That was mainly due to Snapper stocks being in decline and not "out of season".
The Whyalla Snapper Comp, had a range of prize categories to accommodate all fishos, by land and by sea but from memory $25,000 was the first prize, substantially less than what is on offer there.
If with what you guys are saying as far as not being ideal fishing condition , , , , they might be hoping that the LARGE prizes are enough to counteract the lack of fish.
Might be a "watch this space".
As a foot note, wasn't the Comp on a 2 year trial, with next year being the second year?

Thanks Truedogz, that is good factual info. Surely by now they know there wasn't a lot of fish caught, especially in comparison on how many people fished), though it was a success.Truedogz wrote: ↑Thu May 30, 2019 7:18 pmEarly April is still too late. Unless they're doing it in purpose not too disturb or overfish the area too much.
Did they promote catch and release for the comp? Does anyone know?

Probably a yeahnah, prize pool is great no doubt, but i tend to go fishing to avoid the masses (general public masses or fishing masses) and what usually comes with it
