lb report at the barwon river

Post by Matthew drako » Wed Jul 10, 2019 7:55 pm

Hey all,
Fished the Barwon river today and encountered some nice fishing,
picked up countless mullet (20-35cm)
a few bay trout around 25 cm's
1 salmon going a whopping 60cm
1 trevally going 45-50cm (didn't measure the trevally: estimation)
Also landed a few undersize fish such as tailor, a flatty and a kgw
The current was crazy fast and the tide never really slacked due to the 40knot northerly winds (the only day I could fish all week hence why braving the winds)
The current was that fast that I couldn't leave my bigger setup on bait runner lol, it would just slowly take line.
All in all a great day.
rigs used were simple paternoster rigs with kl hooks. not too sure on the size as I brought them a while ago. Estimating size 4.
The bigger setup which landed the salmon and trevally was a running sinker rig with a size 2/0 suicide hook.
Baits were pilchards and pipis.
Cheers, Matt

Nice you did well. With strong current and wind it would've been hard, yet you did great! You saw you came you conquered!

thanks mate, good fun the big trevs and boy did that salmon use the current to just peel drag lol. I look forward now for the warmer weather where I've gotten onto some bigger kgw in the system. Great to see the mixed bag the river still offers

ocean grove boat ramp. due to the high winds we fished the ramp knowing there would be no boats launching. the jetty downstream from the bridge provides excellent fishing during calmer weather and less tidal flow. have hooked a jewie their and caught many whiting, luderick, trevs and salmon. You also have the option of the ozone jetty which provides the opportunity of squid on slack tide as well as the above fish mentioned. personally, i'm not a fan of sheep wash beach due to the smaller sizes of fish compared to these other locations and due to the influx of people fishing it.
