Mahi mahi (dolphin fish) in Portland
Quoted from fisheries:
"Well, this is unexpected! We know that Portland is a fantastic fishing destination for southern bluefin tuna, but as @reelfishingmelbourne recently discovered, you can also snag yourself a dolphin fish or Mahi Mahi if you will
It’s unusual for these guys to be found this far south, but it’s not unheard of. We know that with changes to water temperatures and mixing of currents, more warm-water species are starting to appear in Victorian waters.
Mahi Mahi are a highly mobile fish and appear to be hitching a ride on the Leeuwin current which flows south near the western coast of Australia.
We’re keen to continue supporting Portland as a premier saltwater fishing destination for southern bluefin tuna and many other species, with events such as our Hooked on Portland music and fishing festival every January long weekend. We believe Portland is the next game fishing capitol of Australia…prove us wrong, Bermagui!
If you’ve ever caught something as crazy as a dolphin fish in Victorian waters, we want to know about it! Send us a message through social media to report your unusual catch"
I sense the end of the world is coming in fast

Re: Mahi mahi (dolphin fish) in Portland
heard of recent reports of a dolphin fish caught somewhere around lakes entrance, a tiger shark and cobia off the 90 mile... climate is slowly changing and sub tropical species are heading for more temperate waters
i'm heading out this week end targeting Spanish macks at jam jerrup, just quietly.

Yep exactly. They even used to install a FAD to attract them there in May until recently. Odd that fisheries are surprised....

Yeah that struck me as strange also, about fisheries.
Back in 2017 I think it was 1 charter working in that area managed to get 3 or 4 of them in a cpl of days. I aleays hear about at least 1 at the start of the tuna season every yr.
