Flinders Pier 16/02/18

Post by whambamsam » Sat Feb 16, 2019 11:45 pm

Hey folks,

Went down to Flinders pier aiming to get some whiting, but also to try my luck with the squid. I've never caught any squid at the Mornington Pier (and still haven't), but thought it'd be worth a shot.

Arrived late afternoon and was throwing a 2.5 jig around for about 20 minutes. On the retrieve, I looked down and noticed that a squid had been following it in. I dropped it back down and bang, finally caught my first one ever - hood just under 20cm.

Mate joined me shortly after, nabbed another with at least 28-30cm hood. I lost another one that felt like a decent size as well, I think probably because I didn't set the drag right on my rod after maxing it out to unsnag it from some weeds then dropping it down a little too much.

Still - super stoked about my first calamari, will definitely pop back down and try again (with a few more jigs this time).

Congratulations whambamsam on joining the Squid Club. They look like nice clean Squid too, well done boys.

Now you have to be careful with squid, we all get inked, it is only a matter of time. So rest assured now that you are catching them, you are going to eventually join the Men in Black Ink Club too.

Haha - that pic of my mates squid was cropped for his privacy, but he actually copped a blast of seawater from the squid to the face. Lucky it wasn't ink...
