Bungalow Demolition

Post by Texas » Wed Jun 13, 2018 2:43 pm

My mate and I are demolishing a bungalow
After 2 part days of work, we are down to the frame and one wall of weatherboards.
There was no roof as, I don't do asbestos
We have gutted the interior, with it's carpet, 2 layers of lino, then newspaper.
The walls and ceiling were masonite, so that helped.
It appears that the walls were constructed on the floorboards.
I removed 3 walls of weatherboards using a sledgehammer (damn they're heavier than they used to be). The remaining wall appears to have "unrotted" weatherboards, which can be used on the main house.Nails used are bullet head.
What is the best way to remove the boards???? We were thinking a pinch bar.
Also is there a knack in removing floorboards??
Also also, how to remove concrete stumps ?? (The outside ones are anyway)
Fyi - we are both 64 and not builders. This is a love job, so expensive equipment is out.
Cheers Gra
Ps -- Injuries so far (between us) -- fat lip, (nearly) a black eye & numerous bleeds

to get the weatherboards off with out damaging them best to punch the nails through the boards with a nail punch then use a jimmy bar for the rest

could use a 6 foot fencing bar to wedge up the boards levering from the side of the joists

Get one of these and the smaller one plus a half decent hammer.

Place the narrow end between anything you want separated. Smash it in. Hang off it. Let the leverage do the work for you.

Work systematically one end to the other popping the nails and you’ll have it apart fast enough.

you want to save the floor boards too? if not run a power saw up either side of the floor joist, makes it heaps easier then trying to pull up whole boards at once. belt the concrete stumps with a sledge hammer and they fall to bits, generally have a 6mm bar right up the center of them so once there busted apart cut the bar off with a grinder and job done but if you want the whole stump out i use an excavator as it will have a concrete block attached in the ground that wont want to come out easily. weather boards try using a shovel slide it up under the boards over the stud area and pry them off.. pinch bars and crowbars will damage the board below that your levering off

Just get a bigger hammer! :a_goodjob:

Seriously though. Boards off with a jimmy bar, pry bar etc. how are the floor boards fixed down? Tongue n groove? Do you plan on using them again. I'd get 1 up some how. Maybe bash a chisel in to get the first 1 up. Than use a crow bar and block to pry them up. How big are the stumps? Conc all the way to the top or just dirt. Dig around the top for a start than go with a high lift jack should get them up
