Good question! I have not fished there in the heat of summer! Worth a try but and possibly have a contingency plan of trying the Goulburn - it will definitely be a lot cooler. If the Rubicon flow is weak - just feel the water - if it is warm, then go elsewhere. Spinners are just as good as any lure to use I believe. I use Blue Fox Super Vibrax with success. Smaller size blades ( 3 - 4 gram) spinners as the larger ones can be a bit 'full on' if you end up fishing in strong current. Floating minnow lures as well always work but are a tad more expensive. Only downside is wherever you go, there will be a lot of people around. Good Luck!!!!fishingvic wrote:.....Will the trout be active after this hot weather?.....

Re: Some small trout from the Rubicon River!
G'day Jim,
I bought a red Blue fox super vibrax you recommended, and hooked up (and dropped) a small brown trout on the 4th cast!
Then had a 30cm+ brown chase the lure to within 1 meter of my feet, but it missed eating the lure by a few cm's.
The forecast for Melbourne was 25oC yesterday.....
Didn't realise the forecast for Buxton was 39oC (1.5 hours out of Melbourne), and very very HOT!!!! so spent most of the time in the water as it was actually too hot to fish!
The water was still cool and flowing relatively fast.
Spotted 3 fish just north of the bridge where the trees have been excavated...

Re: Some small trout from the Rubicon River!
Nice mate! i've always found blue on gold spinners and small rapalas' for the rubicon and acheron work best!
Can someone explain to me what constitutes good water temperature and how hot it needs to be to not be worth trying at all?

Re: Some small trout from the Rubicon River!
Thought you were pretty keen going out in what I knew was going to be a hot day! Weather difference may have something to do with the Great Divide. Forecast top for Shepparton tomorrow is 42, 32 for Melbourne.fishingvic wrote:......The forecast for Melbourne was 25oC yesterday.....

DougieK , I am not that versed with preferred trout conditions except I know they like it cold! When it does get up to the warmer limits, I think they just slow down a bit, perhaps a lot!!! Do they still have to eat, I would think so but I'm not sure. Definitely a lot harder to catch and at this time, if you can access deep water, this is the place to go. You are probably aware that as water is released from depth at Eildon, that the water is always cooler and therefore can be a better option.
thanks
Jim
