Myrtleford trout

Post by Truedogz » Mon Dec 26, 2016 4:39 pm

I am doing a serious trip into the high country in the new year and thought I had best brush up on my fly casting skills. So I headed out to a stream out of the back of Myrtleford yesterday to do an overnighter and use the long wand in the morning.

Got out to the spot and there was still a fair flow in the stream due to the wet spring:

Threw out a spinner late in the afternoon and picked up three small trout:

This morning I waded upstream at first light. There were trout rising everywhere. I reckon the activity was caused by the change in weather. So I stuck on a red ant pattern fly - this always seems to catch trout during a change in weather even if there are no ants around.

I landed nine trout, all small like the one in the pic except for one that was bigger, about 35 cm long. Had a lot of takes, they went nuts over the ant fly. Nearly every rise that I cast too the trout took the ant but being small they often didn't hook up well.

Unfortunately in my half awake state this morning I forgot to slip the camera into my top pocket - I am such a d*******d!

Anyhow, all fish were released for someone else to catch. There are plenty of trout around if you can get away from the Christmas crowd.

Best Wishes

It's an exhilarating feeling catching a fish
But it's an even better feeling releasing them

Well done mate. We hit the Latrobe last night to try get my first on fly. Was something like 99% humidity and raining when we arrived. Fog on the water so much that we had difficulty seeing the flies or even each other. It was surreal. Fish were rising and I had two takes but didn't connect but Alex got into a few.
