Hot tip. Go to any lake/pond around you. If it looks more like a coffee than a pristine lake it has carp. It's as simple as that.

Second tip. If it has carp there's a damn good chance theres a few units in amongst them.

After a muggy morning and a spout of rain around lunchtime, accompanied by a 10 degree drop in temperature, I decided the weather was still good enough to go fishing, so I decided to jump on the treadly and head down Millers road, past the Mobil oil refinery in Altona, to my new local, Cherry "wind" Lake.

I couldn't believe my luck when I got there, despite a bit of a breeze on the ride there, there was hardly a ripple on the water (relatively speaking). With a little activity around (I saw a large Carp come up to the surface) I thought I'd be in for a good afternoon. So I cast my two telescopic rods in and waited...and waited. After half an hour I still had nothing, I wasn't even losing my bait. After about 45 minutes I decided to check one of my rods, more out of boredom than anything else, to find a small Carpio on the end. I didn't even realise, as the rod hadn't moved at all. I stayed for about another 45 minutes, but it was very uneventful, no more bites, nibbles or fish. Maybe a consequence of the low barometer?

I'm not sure if I'll get out in the next day or two, as the weather seems to be turning back into it's usually wintery self. I'm keen to find a new spot or two to expand my repertoire of spots to hit up in the west. I might go on a reconnaissance mission along the mighty Koroit Creek. It looks very 'Carpy' in places, but seems very difficult to get to!
