Maribyrnong River 14/05 (Yak Based) *** VIDEO ADDED ***
So I was ummm'ing and ahhh'ing where to go over the weekend. Wife is due in a few weeks so fishing trips will be a distant memory for a couple of months at least, so I am trying to make the most of the limited opportunities afforded to me at the moment.
I decided to hit the Maribyrnong on Saturday morning and the gear was packed late Friday night.
I got to the car park and unloaded before the sun was up. By the time I got to the jetty, sun began to rear it's head and it was time to launch. There was a stiff northerly blowing so I was wondering if this will impact holding position in the river.
Launched and headed up towards the Essendon Rowing Club flicking plastics along the way. It was still fairly dark so I couldn't spot any bream yet but I had no luck none the less. After making my way up to the Rowing Club I turned back and decided to tie on a hardbody instead. I tied on an SX40 minnow and within a few minutes I was on!
This first fish wasn't happy and pulled like a steam train on the little 1000 sienna and 4lb braid. Just as I thought I was gaining line, it peeled off some more, and then more again. The wind and current pushed me up away from the fish so I spun the rod around so that I could pull the fish out into open water and keep me in the fight. After a tense tussle I got him in net! He measured 31.5cm to my surprise as he fought hard, although I was happy none the less.
After releasing the first fish I was drifting back to launch and then bang! I'm on again! This one didn't have as much fight as the first one though, however did provide enough entertainment to put a grin on my face.
Netted him and threw the lure out a few more times until I got back to launch.
A nice way to spend a glorious sunny Melbourne morning!
I'll post up a video a bit later, for now here are some shots of the day
