Freshwater fishing spots near Mitcham
Hi. I will be on holidays in 2 months with family that live in Mitcham. I would like to know of any places we could do 1 day trips. I will be taking 2 young grandsons with also. It would be good if some of these places had things like BBQ etc. All the best from SA

Rowville Lakes but there are no BBQ grills in there. Not much play area but it is a very nice place. Carps here are HUGE on these 3 man made lakes. Redfin and trout are the main targets from this place. Water is always clear.
Ringwood Lake - nice kids' play ground close to the fishing platform. This should keep them busy when fish are not on the chew. You may want to call the Maroondah council and ask if there are BBQ grills on site or if they allow portable barbies to be brought in. Carp is the only fish worth chasing here - for FUN. water is always choc brown.

Lauriston Reservoir is a great place to take the family. Nice clean water with plenty of redfin & trout to be caught and only just over an hour from melbourne. It also has bbq and toilet facilities.
Here is a couple of pics of trout caught there earlier this year.

Re: Freshwater fishing spots near Mitcham
G'day Brett they released a few thousand trout in there over the last few years and the growth rates have been very good. Over last summer we landed several of these fish that were between the 1-2lb mark and were only fingerlings a couple of years ago. I have fished it since I was a kid and was the same only caught the occasional trout but they are alot more common now as well as catching a feed of reddies. It's a great place to fish as the kids will always catch something and lovely clean water.
Cheers Steve

Lilydale Lake is another good spot. Nice place for rainbows.
Albert Park Lake in the city is open for fishing. BIG carp and yellow bellies in there.
Royal Melbourne Botanic Garden...the lake there is full of HUGE eels. :lolf: Bring a handline in the evening. Pretend you are enjoying the weather and you know the rest.. :lolf: Try fishing there where the movie is on. :lolf:

Hi. Garfish has reminded me of my interest in eels. Could you folks also let me know where one could catch eels as well, in the area easily accessed from Mitcham. ps I think the Botanic Gardens would be out of bounds. All the best to all and thanks for the replies from Alan
