Fishing when rivers are full

Post by ThomoT » Tue Sep 19, 2017 9:55 pm

With the rain lately, the Yarra has gone up by about 1.5m. So it is quite full, spots that I could access are no longer out of the water, and the quiet spots are running quickly. So it seems a different challenge to find the fish.

Is it worth the time when the river is this high? Any tips on how to approach fishing in a full river?

Cheers.

Can't comment on the yarra specifically but in any high flow area a break from the current that provides access to food is key, whether this be flooded margins or an eddy with current bringing food past it's your best bet to find fish.

Landed my biggest Bass in a high river with grey coloured water. Day prior was a waste, same height, but brown coffee water. No Yarra experience but keep an eye on it and as soon as its dropping and colour changes I'd hit it

If there's any backwater runs, they would be worth trying out...

cheers

I keep well away from the Yarra when it is running as high as it is at present. Used to try fish it but found the result just weren't worth the effort or risk.
I walked the dogs in Yering on the weekend and was amazed how high and fast it was it was. In some sections it was a solid two plus meters up on it's Summer levels.
The other point that concerns me - is when it runs high it erodes the bank and you do get lot of bank collapses - last thing you want it to be standing on the bank and it gives way - particularly when there is all that extra water in the river.

Thanks for the replies. It all makes good sense. I'll probably let it drop before I venture out. And try to find somewhere out of the current.

With the weather this good, it is hard to resist :-)
