freshwater crays around negambie crayfish

Post by alexcarrillo » Wed Jun 14, 2017 8:50 pm

GDAY
after an unsuccessful year last year and a failed trip last weekend i need any help i can get

I want to get a few crays. Im located around tullamarine and willing to travel 2 hours or so to find some. i used to go to a spot in the golbourn when i was a kid and get HUGE crays but dad can't remember where or even what town. the river is a big area and I'm not even sure where to start.

if anyone has any tips or spots. I'm not after exact spots just a general idea.

:water:

I know around Majors creek is popular but I think the size has been an issue over previous years. There are others here that will have better info. Years ago we would go after crays around Kerrisdale but I'm not sure how it is now.

More than a few years ago, all the male crays were undersized, the females were of size, but in berry, so were returned to the water.

When I was a kid, my father and his mates would catch hundreds in a weekend and this is what contributed to the decline we have today, not only that the spiny murray cray is slow growing taking 6-9 years to reach sexual maturity.

we used to catch lots along the Jamieson & Goulburn rivers as kids, have not seen them in the numbers or sizes for years in either river. I'm sure we all took more than we needed to protect their longevity. Have started to see some good sizes in gippsland on recent trips, hopefully they'll breed up a few more.

There have been some good ones caught in the area, you just have to have a go wherever, cheers davo
It's an exhilarating feeling catching a fish
But it's an even better feeling releasing them

Caught two at Eildon last season both returned one with a tail full eggs the other a smaller cray. Both caught just off the bank at night with a torch and piece of meat on fishing line.
Also had friends who caught quite a few up there last year.

I had a few hanging around my bait net and had a big one that escaped on my fishing rod earlier this year. I was fishing the Goulburn river just out of Murchison.

Not Sure Barra Mick friends were trying to catch Yabbies and got them as by-catch. Didn't take them as they were unsure of the regulations and i hadn't seen one before the first one just thought it was a large yabby.
