Hazelwood Barra thanks for the memories.

Post by rb85 » Wed Mar 29, 2017 7:44 pm

From the day these fish were released into the cooling pond the hazel wood Barra were always going to be entertaining.

Reports started filtering in on some local anglers trying their luck very early in the piece when a few weeks prior to the expected opening the big announcement happened full closure of Hazelwood power station by the end of march.

Then it was a free for all with punters and local tackle store owners alike trying their luck some having great success others battling the story of the fishery. As the date of opening got closer the stories of Barra captures grew this may have got too much for a few people.

A few days before the opening Paul Worstleing and David Kramer had a authority sanctioned early fish. The night before on talking fishing which happens to be fully hosted by tackleworld employees who have featured on Ifish MrKramer stated theres no early fish . The ifish guys did have a reasonable session on the pondage catching all their fish within an exclusion zone where fisherman were later asked to leave some even receiving fines.

Once the pondage open there was jubilation and disappointment with some damaged boats on rock walls and the shallow ramp to add to the heartbreak. Plenty of pictures were taken of anglers triumphantly holding their Barra up strangely enough a lot of the fisherman who were holding up these apparently big fish also had knees or hands that were bigger than their heads.

Now the hot water has stopped pumping in so who knows how long we will have a Barra fishery for.
Hazelwood Barra thanks for the memories and remember there will be no early fish.

The whole story is sad, fishery had so much potential, the locals are devastated with the potential loss of jobs, and all those fish will likely die. What is the council going to do when it has hundreds of tons of rotting cichlids sitting in that lake?

The fishery definitely comes secondary to the loss of income and opportunity for the community as far as the rotting fish I'm led to believe that the pondage is the responsibility of the company who owns the station.

That Kramer bloke mentioned on Tuesday night something about redirecting water from a hot water bore that is nearby that has water temps of 46 degrees and is having discussions with the relevant authorities to see if it can be done.

Be a lot of costs and effort involved in redirecting the water it would not be a matter of running a poly pipe across the road.
