hazelwood18th jan
Being lucky enough to get a permit I had to take the opportunity to fish for barra in victoria. Now I have never caught a barra in my life never fished for them. I sought advice from the master barra mick so me and tuna tube dropped around to his place drinking a couple of lights round his pool he took the time to convey his knowledge so much so he lent me rods and some lures my smallest baitcaster reel is a charter special.
I drove the boat up to the caravan park and pulled up on the sandy beach we set up camp next to a table and bbq and sat back with a couple of cold ones it had been sweltering all day it was very calm and warm.
We woke the next day it was cold and windy not what we wanted we had breakfast and hit the water we trolled and trolled changed lures and trolled some more my 650 haines is not the best boat to do Hazelwood in the deepest point was 10mt but there was lots of sudden shallow spots the water was a murky brown and no chance of seeing the bottom.
We saw plenty of good marks on the sounder but in the two days we were there no one caught one,the water temp was 28 deg at the coldest point and 33 degrees near where poacher paul caught the barra the fisheries were hiding in some trees preventing anyone venturing past the no boating bouys. The wind chopped up the water and at the bottom of the lake near the power station was like a washing machine. We kept trolling and casting to no avail by 3 we had had enough defeated we headed back to the camp site I said to tuna tube I can't go home without catching a fish so off the back of the boat a number 10 long shanked hook a bit of bread and I must have caught 50 tilapia feeling better we put the boat on the trailer high speed lift the leg then winch the rest of the way. Tied the boat down and we were home by 730 pm a great few days but sadly no fish a big thanks to barra mick I will have to go to the nt now.
Lures to troll lures to cast. with specific instructions but most of all he gave me a map
So on tuesday I picked tuna tube up and we made our way to Hazelwood we arrived at the lake around 1230 and it was 35 degrees. The plan launch the boat then tuna would drive to the caravan Park and I would meet him there. The first problem the ramp was to shallow and my trailer has bunks and I couldn't get the leg deep enough to back the boat off to the right of the boat ramp was a sandy beach and the water looked deeper good old tube braved the 29 degree water to check the depth, he backed the boat down the grass verge onto the sand and into the water and the boat came off the trailer no worries.I drove the boat up to the caravan park and pulled up on the sandy beach we set up camp next to a table and bbq and sat back with a couple of cold ones it had been sweltering all day it was very calm and warm.

Yes we saw some in the trees to the right of the no boating zone opposite the rock wall and another 4x4 between the boat ramp and the power station. We taunted them for a while going very close to the red bouys before turning away,

Bad luck NudeUp it really frustrates me to see people go home empty handed when the bulk of the fish are holding in one particular area which fisheries won't let you fish yet allowed a tackle store owner and tv personality enter to hype up the fishery and promote their products.

Good report mate but bad luck about the fish.
We have our tickets to go in a few weeks but will wait and see if we head out, would rather a day on the bay going by all the reports.

Nice report Nude Up - shame there were no barra for you.
But hey how many times have we all been out and not managed a fish.....i just put in three trips in a row on the Yarra and came back empty handed.
I understand the frustration of there being an off limits area - but fish are being caught there - just not by everyone on every trip. Doesn't that make it that mush more special to catch one when you finally do.
Just because it is stocked does not make it a sure thing - it's fishing, sometime they bite and sometime not, even if you do put n all the prep work.
Paul and David did fish the out of bounds area - but it was part of the overall promotion of the fishery.
All we can keep doing is throwing a line out and hoping, and enjoy the fishery while it lasts

It was never about promoting the fishery it was self promotion. There's a Tackleworld franchise 10 minutes down the road from the pondage them or no one from the local community was invited to fish same goes for all the other shop owners in the vicinity.
The corresponding talking fishing (the episode a day prior to IFISH being filmed David lied to the audience) , Paul's Facebook live Q&A and their fishing reports were all about promoting their business. What about the tackle stores in the Latrobe Valley who like the rest of the area are facing uncertain times?
It could have been done so much better if others fished earlier and they should not have been exempt from the rules everyone else followed.
