Yarra Thread

Post by ronan » Fri Jan 24, 2020 11:10 am

Fished the yarra around templestowe today from 7:00 to 10:00 am, used a variety of baits(worms, corn, and bread) on a running sinker rig made of 6lb fluorocarbon. Water quality wasn’t real good, had no bites on the two rods I had in. Saw a cod bust up but not much else happened. Would appreciate any advice for this area :) .
Thanks, Ronan.

Its hard when the water is chocolate like that.
Try again when it clears up a bit.

Hi Ronan, I think you'll find it tough going over the next week or so because of the rain and all the dirty water coming down.

I reckon up your leader to 12lb-15lb. I think 6lb is a bit light in those waters. There are plenty of eels and big carp. Also try a paternoster rig on one of your rods while the other has a running sinker.

Persistence is key. Just keep putting in the hours and you'll be rewarded.

Cheers, Anth

Tough fishing the yarra in those conditions - id switch your setup like Anth has suggested and i'd try to focus on fishing either visible structure (a rarity), bends or slow backpools. Straights on the yarra are commonly 2-4m deep with zero structure to entice fish to frequent. Making those changes and using worms, id be surprised if you didn't get a least a carp or eel.

My brother caught an eel last night around Templestowe, not sure how he managed it in these conditions. I rarely fish the Yarra when the water is running this high and dirty. Good luck mate.

Went to the yarra again ( 4:00 - 8:00pm, this time in the eltham area. Two rods in, one a paternoster and the other a running sinker, made from 8lb flurocarbon. Used worms and bread for bait. Had some small bites but no hook-ups. The water is already a bit clearer than it was 2 days ago, which is good to see. Also witnessed two cod bust on the surface. Will take some spinnerbaits and stumpjumpers the next time I go.

G'day Ronan
I've also been fishing the Yarra of late - it is tough going even getting a bite. All I can put it down to is the amount of water still coming down stream.
Hopefully it will slow down a bit soon and the action will start again

How can you tell it is cod on the surface? Theres plenty of carp taking bugs off the surface there

back again at the yarra this morning, this time armed with a baitcaster and a few surface lures. Rode through Westerfolds park, and tried to find spots along the opposite side of griffiths park and sweenys lane. Found about 2 fishable spots for 2 kms along the river. The shoreline was mostly 2-3 m high steep cliffs, or thick reeds, couldn’t cast anywhere.

Another session in the yarra with a baitcaster, found some great spots between warrandyte and eltham. Fished from 6:00 am to 10:30. Used surface lures, spinner baits, and hardbodies. Fished right up against snags and structure to no avail. Covered a good km of water.
