Garfish are predominantly vegetarian, so are often found near or over weed beds. Having said that, they do move around a lot. I have often just started a fine berley mist and within 15-20 minutes, the first sign is a fish jumping in the trail.
Interestingly, they are also cannibalistic and I find garfish is great bait for gars. My theory is that the pheromones excite them, and they really only get excited about breeding and feeding, and it appears sometimes they get confused.

I'm not sure that they are predominantly veg. I've seen gars slashing at baitfish, chase down lures and actively hunt. I'm not talking once burleyed up into a feeding mode, just free swimming

well done so the better quality hooks helped? grab some flyfishing hooks they are very fine wire go straight in they work very well with silverfish as soon as the float moves up/down or sideways strike reel in fast unhook fish cast straight back into you burley trail keep your split shot close to your float unless your fishing in strong current with these fine wire hooks you shouldnt miss much hope this helps you
