Gar fish tips
Re: Gar fish tips
pretty much use very small long shanks and use silverfish or maggots for bait. make sure to burley alot

Re: Gar fish tips
Are you land based or boat?
Berley is pretty essential either way, but not too much. A fine mist of bread crumbs to keep them excited, but not fed. Long shank 10 or 12 size hook, pencil float and sliding stopper. You may need to play around with the depth you set the hooks below the surface. A slight chop on the surface is definitely a good thing, as they get pretty flighty when the surface is calm. when you hook them, try to get them in pretty quickly as they are quite adept at throwing the hook if left on for too long, or given any slack.

Re: Gar fish tips
Got a Gama or other really sharp hook? Also too much bait?
Re: Gar fish tips
Yeah might change hooks brand,I have just been altering sinker weightsn float depths.
Re: Gar fish tips
if you are hooking better with paternoster rig, I would suggest you are probably a little slow with the strike on the other rig? The paternoster is more direct, so less chance of the line going slack. Sometimes I find just gently pulling the line in actually prompts a more reactive strike from the fish.
