Why do some people put mono on their spool before braid?

Is it just to save money on line that may not even be used?

Hi mate, it's because braid can slip on a spool if it doesn't have any mono backing to 'bite' into. It also allows you to have a full spool of line (braid is so thin that most of the time you'd have to buy a heap of it to fill a spool)

It's usually because braid can slip when tied straight to the spool and a short length of mono before the braid provides grip and prevents this from happening. Also if the spool holds 300m of braid for example but you don't need that much it is cheaper to load up some mono first and then 150m of braid (or whatever amount you require).

for most of the fishing i do 150M is fine so i have no need to put 300M on, some people completely fill the spool and then flip the braid around when it becomes a bit worn though

as above.
but i did read mesh tape on the spool to give the braid something to bite into.

I run full spools on heavy gear (300-500 odd metres). Electrical tape is your friend

Plain old masking tape works fine.

I use this when i need to spool the braid all the way for low capacity reels or if i'm going to be balooning.

Much prefer 150 odd metres of braid onto mono. For trout half that much is fine.
