Whole baits and Squid
So, the last few times I have been out in WP, I have had a whole Pilly or yakka out in case something substantial swims past. Trouble is, Last time especially I have had a large squid grab the bait. Last time especially, I had a squid pulling line off a 750 Spinfisher, would have been a PB for sure. I usually drop a jig down at this point, but its hit and miss, and in 15+ mtrs of water with current flow, you cant egi.
What I have been thinking, is about having out a full bait, but with squid barbs at the bottom. Im sure it will end up being not legal, so I thought I would ask peoples opinion first, normally I have a fixed and a running hook, with the first hook pushed through the back of the pilly, then in the gills and out the eye, with the second pinned towards the rear half of the fish. If you could attach a squid prong with a swivel towards the tail you might be able to cover both bases.
Can you rig something like this up legally? I have drawin a picture in paint to illustrate.

Actually, now I think about it, you would rig the bait up the other way around, with the prong near the head, and a half hitch around the tail, all good tho, principal is the same

Re: Whole baits and Squid
whiting on a squid spike mate..
havent done it myself but been told by a few it works 10x better than egi for big squid.
I know that it's legal, and i dont see why you cant chuck a hook or two in.

There are live bait rigs available for squid. Basically what you've drawn. Recently saw that rui tang had gotten some in. Check facebook for pics

Perfectly legal and the best way to fish larger squid in deeper waters in wpb.AVG_Fisho wrote:whiting on a squid spike .
I usually have a whole bait out for the same exact reason Scraglor. And i have caught squid on circle hooks too.

Re: Whole baits and Squid
There's an episode of adventure bound where lee live baits for squid and gummies in that way. Except the barb is at the head end I can't find the video.
You can also run a standard gummy/snapper outfit with an 8oz sinker and a squid jig tied to it instead of a hook. Used that rig to jig up arrows in 70m. It will work in 15m
Or just run 4 or so ball sinkers onto the line before tying on your jig. Will get it down easily enough.

Re: Whole baits and Squid
Hey guys, thanks for the replies. I usually fish a jig on a dropper in deep water, I was more meaning having a big bait out for fish, but having a barb on the bottom in case a squid grabs it. I guess it probably will negatively effect the hook up rate on fish, I'm just sick of dropping big squid when they grab a bait intended for a gummy etc.
