Lauriston and Upper Coliban on Saturday

On Saturday I slept in but by midday I decided it was time for a fish so I headed up to Lauriston. I cast a Jaz 4-gram vibe around the dam wall and then around the most western parts of the lake in the lovely treed shores. I got a take from a small trout and saw a midging trout that I probably spooked when I cast my vibe on top of it. I then walked to where the creek flows in on the most western part of the lake as I once saw some solid smelting action here but it's never been repeated since. So after 2 hours it was off to Upper Coliban.

At the eastern end of the dam wall there was a guy with a small 25cm trout in a bucket which he later let go. I threw the vibe around for another hour. The water was quite discoloured, much worse than Lauriston. Near sunset I caught a small trout, probably about six months old. That was it for the day.

Next time I might try fishing with a bait rod and try spinning at the same time close to the rod. I figure a bait rod with power bait + glassies and lures to explore both top and bottom water might be a better approach to put the odds in my favour.

These two lakes are usually very frustrating, I must be prepared to get up earlier and drive that little bit further.

Good report. The Upper Coliban has been very good to me this year but it has exclusively been on baits; the lure fisherman I've meet have said that its been a real hard slog.

Yeah you should be hitting the place early morning or late arvo to maximise your chances.

Good report Pedro!

Has anyone here ever seen them roaching there before? Double-figure beasts rounding up and smashing through schools of roach? Have seen it on a couple of occasions in the summer months. An awesome sight to see.

In Lauriston I have seen tons of roach surface feeding in summer and caught them on fly. There's also plenty of runted reddies in the place but in winter I think these small fish all go to sleep. I wonder whether they are easy or difficult for the trout to feed on in winter? I will have to go scuba diving there one day to find out!
