Alpine Trout
Was working at Falls Creek last week. New business partner just happened to be a member of a lodge there, and being a skilled fly fisho had a pretty good knowledge of some of the local waters.
First evening we headed over to Rocky Valley Storage. He flicked a few flies about for a hit or two but no fish landed. I worked my way around the shore using a black and gold tassie devil, not much luck until I fished the deeper water from a rocky point. At that spot I landed 5 pan sized brown trout, catching a fish or at least getting a hit most casts on dusk.
We kept three and I was really impressed how well they came up in the smoker
A couple of nights later we ducked over to Pretty Valley where the trout were believed to be bigger. But despite walking extensively around the shoreline we each only got the one hit, and both from very small fish.
After departing Falls I headed across to a private cattle farm to do some hunting. Set up an ambush for a deer on dusk, but despite a sambar walking straight into it as anticipated, a shot never presented, just got honked a dozen times and it slipped quietly away unseen. Next day the wind picked up so got the rod out again before heading home. In a 2 hour session using a rapala brown trout I got 7 hits, for 4 fish landed and 2 good pan sized rainbows kept around the 3/4 of a pound mark.
They came up well just cooked whole. Will probably head up that way over Easter.....

Good one. They do like that black and gold don't they! Got some black and gold T tail SP's which seem to do the job as well. Nice scenery where you were

Great read and post but do you realise that they are the first headless trout species I have ever seen
