Ferntree Gully Quarry 5,6,7,8 October

Post by arabshark » Sat Oct 10, 2015 9:02 pm

I keep hitting up Ferntree Gully Quarry as the weather has been nice in the morning and I have a few hours before work begins in the afternoon.

Monday 5th I manged 3 small reddies on scrubbies all caught and released. My new braid has made he bites at least twice as strong, but my leader kept getting wrapped around my swivel and sinker.

Tuesday 6th I used A1 African Night Crawlers and caught and released 4 small reddies. I made my leader longer and used bigger swivels and problem solved. This fish can run with the bait a bit longer before tangles happen. I also caught and released 1 medium sized reddie off a ZMan Bloodworm Grub Soft Plastic. I was getting heaps of follows with the soft plastics, and a couple with vibes, but soft plastics tend to work better there.

Wednesday 7th just managed to catch and release 1 small reddie off scrub worm.

Thursday 8th had maybe 20 bites as soon as the bait landed but they lost interest after 1 bite. I think they're bored with the taste of worm.

I use a running sinker rig with a size 5 ball sinker on 6lb Braid to a barrel swivel and 6lb leader. I use Gamakatsu size 10 Octopus hooks (my favourite for Freshwater fishing). Smaller than a size 10 occi for redfin Dougie K?

Have you tried running a pencil float down a meter or so to 3x split shots and one or two sz12-18 hooks with maggots or worms on it? Then burleying 3-5 maggots on top of the float every minute or two?

Im no expert at all on freshwater fishing but I got shown this method at roweville lakes and caught approx 40 small reddies, roach and small trout in an afternoon. have tried it a few different places with reasonable results.

Anyone with more experience fishing the fresh locally feel free to correct me.
