Hi
I don't think there are any trout right near the top - just galaxiids. So it depends just how high up you went. I found some of the creeks towards the top of Baw Baw lacking trout, particularly those flowing down to the Thompson - I suspect the gradient is just too steep for them to get up there.
Fishing Monthly have a few articles on the Tanjil.
If you are going out that way maybe try the Torongo as years ago I found it to be quite reliable - here is a nice article on it: http://www.flyfishingvictoria.com/toorongo-river/
