"Common catch that tastes great!"
I love this line in the forum entry.
The reason been is because THEY ARN'T COMMON! I have never caught a flathead and it's annoying!
Where are they guys? and im landbased, no boat. it has gotten to the stage where i could walk through the water saying "here flattie flattie flattie" and ill have just as much of a chance at catching them as I would with a rod and bait lol

They are on the bottom mate
You fishing ppb or the estuaries? I've pulled heaps out of the yarra just by fishing soft plastics on the bottom hard up to the bank and at night. I'm landbased too. I chase bream and quite frankly flatheads are annoying as they generally trash my plastic. Anywhere from docklands down to the mouth should be workable. Look for shallows or natural choke points - they are an ambush predator and wait for you to hop your lure past them.
Bait - dunno can't help you - very rarely fish with it.
If you're going to eat a heap .... Further down in ppb might be a better option

Grubs, squidgy wrigglers, squidgy fish ... Gulp sand worms. .... Pretty much anything works if it bounces into their strike zone.
Try the standard lift-drop-pause retrieve. If that's not working sometimes they go for a couple of really energetic whips of the rod... Mix it up until you get hits.
Good luck!

Piers im not too sure off but fish the run out and choke points drop-offs etc. anywhere bait fish get funnelled into as the tide drops
Hopefully someone who picks them up in ppb can give better advice

I can't help land based but from my boat if you are not on or very close to the bottom you won't get them. They are an ambush predator they lie on the bottom any thing moving will turn them on that is why soft plastics work so well on them.

That would be funny I just happen to be a lame for an airline we would have a lot to talk about. I often fish alone out of portarlington due to shift work. I broke my wrist in march and am just about to get the boat back in the water I will pm you next time I have a spot
