Baitcaster or spin rod for beach and peir

Post by tricky » Tue Feb 04, 2014 10:03 pm

Hey Guys

Just getting back into fishing and looking to get a new rod and reel. I'm mostly looking to hit Flatties with SP's so do you think I should go bait caster or spin rod? I like the look of the Shakespeare Slingshot travel rods.

Budget is around 150 for the combo which prob rules out bait caster I know…...

Cheer figured as much.

Any thoughts between Sienna 2500 and the Fin Nor Rampage 2000?

spin rod for casting light lures

i use bait caster for my flathead fishing but just dropping it over the side of the boat normally with 1 ounce sinker and it seams to be ok with that but nothing lighter

Given your budget I would try bump another $20 or so into it.
Sienna 2500 is a good start, but the rods they match them with are less then desirable IMO.
A trion spin rod is about $120 on sale if u hunt around.
Add the sienna and your at around 170-180 mark.
But then u got to add line.
All though the cheaper rods do hold up no problem, they are a bit heavier and well a tad awekward and lack the feedback feeling of the slightly more expencive models.
Hope that made sence

I'd look into the shimano raider II inshore travel rod series, for sp work stick to a 2-4kg model, any heavier and it won't flick light enough jigheads. Definatly spin as opposed to baitcaster.
Nitro also do a great range of travel rods, and as for the reel, shimano sedoona or siennas are quality value for money. 2500 size, anywhere from 6-10lb braid, and pick up some flurocarbon leader 10-15lb and you are set.
You might need to scratch another $50 or so together though.
Tight lines = Good Times!

Yeah, they do... @ $430 +

Read this thread (which you could have found using the search function) http://fishing-victoria.com/viewtopic.p ... it=+travel" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;.

Since then I've added a Slingshot baitcast travel and like their regular rods it's a quality piece of kit for the price. In your range would be Slingshot, Okuma and a new player Crucis (retail about $140) all these are 4 piece and pack down to 60 cm give or take. The Raider would probably be better than them all but is a 3 piece. There are also a heap of generic 4 piece rods getting around and most manufacturers rebadge them and whack one in their range but they are a bit of a noodle and may not suit working plastics.
