Wading for flatties & Plastics

Post by cameronpatrol » Mon Jan 13, 2014 4:21 pm

G'day all
Ive been thinking Of chucking the waders on and wading around Rye on the outside edge of the sandbars and towards tootgarook.
The last boat trip gave me a bit of faith in soft plastics, we got a decent catch and good size too.

I was thinking maybe one day after work would be good to have a crack to cool down but not step on any prickly things or crabs with the waders on.

Has anyone tried this before with an success?

How do you lads store your catch while fishing?
I have a dive float which I use for spearing and I put my catch bag on that, might work?

Cheers cam

I like to use a keeper net when fishing landbased - the one with floats on top - pic here viewtopic.php?f=123&t=7597#p89095" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The fish are kept alive, then at the end of the session, I iki-jime the fish and store in a cooler bag with ice for the trip home.

But I wouldn't use it if I'm wading in the water next to it, the fish distress signals/blood could attract seals or worse, sharks to you. But you would've already faced this risk with speared fish in a dive bag so maybe this is nothing new to you...

Yeah I attach my spear gun to my line which is about 10 meters long and the catch bag is attached to the float.
Just for the reason I dont want to be near the catch lol.

If I were to use the float and bag I would be towing it along.
Ive got a ski biscuit as well but i think it might be a bit too big to tow around, especially when it gets caught in the wind.

A mate and I are going to go out Thursday and have a go.
Aiming for 830 pm.
We're just going to take it as it comes with different techniques, im thinking waist high and cast into the deeper water to start with.
I think a couple of hundred meters towards toot it starts getting weedy, so I think a flick around there might be worth ago go as well.

The answer is yes.

Use the lightest jighead you can to get to the bottom, wade a few metres before the gutter and cast into it, bounce your SP along a couple of times, walk a few metres, repeat.

First thing in the morning is best, as on a bright day the fish will retreat to deeper water after the sun comes up.
