Thanks Cuda, I am relatively new to kingfish fishing so i was just thinking of going somewhere local at the start. I live in Patterson Lakes so is there anywhere in the bay which is close to there?

In the water... Search and you'll find. They're not like chasing red carp or Whiting. You can almost touch them yet they'll have no interest in anything you throw at them. Standard snapper gear has no chance if you're around any sort of structure. And forget any bait that isn't either live or just been killed

I have caught rat kingies at the williamstown footy ground before, Normally give them a try after we have bagged out on salmon. The biggest one so far has been 62-3 cm, which is legal.
Here fishy fishy.......

If you after bigger fish, and I only say this because it's closer than Williamstown, you can try out bass strait for kingies, a 5 minute run from flinders pier around west head , from the marine park all the way to cape schank is good ground. Just look for bommies and troll either lures or live baits past em.

Anywhere near the entrances of both bays in summer and you will be in with a chance, especially wp

Sure it wasn't a yakka? don't see many kingfish that small around here.

hey guys, I seen a decent size 1 last week down at Geelong around the 70cm mark, came right up to my berley pot done a lap and off he went. My brother inlaw yelled try net it but I was too dumb founded and surprised to move lol. Might of had a chance, I was close enough oh well never know now. Put a lure out for it but nothing, so yeah they are around just need something live I think, good luck

I landed a 40cm+ yakka at Flinders a cpl years back which i was convinced was a rat king until I brought it on the pier.

For kingys in ppb you need the sea surface temp to be peaking which is usually around mid jan till late feb. Ive seen them caught outside of these times but its a rough indicator. Ive had them chase my lure off mt martha, only for a salmon to take it. Have seen spearos take them the same day at the same spot so maybe spearing is a better option :snap:
When I got time,
I wet a line cos Im a junkie,
been fishin since a kid,
I like it cos it numbs me..

Last year they didn't turn up until quite late but were still around in April.

Unless you spend a lot of hrs chasing them it is more pot luck.
